At-home pet euthanasia allows your pet to pass peacefully and comfortably in the familiar surroundings of home, surrounded by the people they love. A veterinarian performs the euthanasia with compassion and care, focusing on your pet’s comfort and dignity.
Many families prefer an at-home setting because it allows their pet to remain in a familiar, quiet environment. It also gives family members the opportunity to say goodbye privately, without the stress of traveling to a veterinary hospital.
Pet euthanasia must be performed by a licensed veterinarian. The veterinarian will discuss your pet’s condition, answer your questions, explain the procedure, and make sure you understand each step before proceeding.
The veterinarian will first spend time with you and your pet and discuss the process. Your pet is kept as comfortable and relaxed as possible. The veterinarian will explain each step and allow you time to say goodbye.
The goal of euthanasia is to provide a peaceful and comfortable passing. Your veterinarian will take appropriate steps to minimize anxiety and discomfort throughout the process.
Yes. Our veterinarian can guide you on how to safely comfort and stay close to your pet during the process.
Yes. At-home euthanasia allows family members to be together and say goodbye in a private setting. You can choose a location in your home where your pet feels comfortable.
Children may be included if the family feels it is appropriate for them. Parents or guardians should consider the child’s age and emotional readiness and explain beforehand what will happen in an age-appropriate way.
The length of the appointment can vary depending on your pet and your family’s needs. Usually, 15-30 minutes Our veterinarian will allow time for discussion, the procedure, and saying goodbye.
Yes. Forever Pet Crematory can assist with aftercare and cremation arrangements following at-home euthanasia. We offer several cremation options, including communal, individual, private, and private witness cremation.
At-home euthanasia is arranged directly through our website, under euthanasia page. Or arranged directly with a licensed veterinarian who provides this service. After the appointment, you can contact Forever Pet Crematory to arrange transportation and cremation services.
If you believe your pet is experiencing severe pain, difficulty breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, seizures, or another emergency, contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital immediately. If you decide to proceed with the euthanasia please contact us.
At-home pet and in clinic euthanasia is generally a two-step process performed by a licensed veterinarian:
1. Sedative:
The veterinarian first administers a sedative to help your pet become relaxed, calm, and comfortable. This gives your family time to be close to your pet and provide comfort in their final moments.
2. Final injection:
Once your pet is deeply relaxed and comfortable, the veterinarian administers the final euthanasia medication. This allows your pet to peacefully pass away.
Yes. In-clinic euthanasia is available for families who prefer to have the procedure performed at a veterinary clinic. A licensed veterinarian will discuss the process with you, help keep your pet comfortable, and give you time to say goodbye.
Will my other pets know that their companion has passed away?
Pets can notice changes in a companion’s condition, scent, routine, and behavior. After a pet passes, some surviving pets may sniff or investigate the body, while others may simply walk away. Both responses can be normal.
Allowing a surviving pet to calmly see or sniff their companion after death may help them adjust to the change, although there is no guarantee that it will prevent grief or changes in behavior.
Should my other pets be present during euthanasia?
There is no single answer that is right for every family or every pet. If your other pet is calm and comfortable around the veterinarian, allowing them to be nearby may be appropriate.
Some pets quietly stay close during the sedation and procedure. Others prefer to remain in another room and may choose to approach afterward.
If another pet is anxious, reactive, aggressive, or likely to become overly excited, it may be better to keep them in another room during the procedure and allow a calm, supervised goodbye afterward.
Never force another pet to approach or interact with the deceased pet. Allow them to decide whether they want to investigate.
What should I expect from my other pets afterward?
Surviving pets may temporarily behave differently. You may notice searching, changes in appetite, sleeping more or less, increased attention-seeking, vocalization, or withdrawal.
Maintaining familiar routines, providing reassurance, and monitoring their behavior can be helpful. If significant changes persist or you are concerned about your pet’s health, contact your veterinarian.
This is one of the most difficult decisions a pet owner can face. Quality of life should be discussed with your veterinarian, who can help you evaluate your pet’s condition and treatment options. The AVMA notes that euthanasia may be appropriate when a pet’s quality of life is seriously impaired by an injury or disease that cannot be adequately treated or when suffering can no longer be effectively relieved.
A quality-of-life assessment can help you look at your pet more objectively. Consider keeping track of:
* Pain and comfort: Is your pet comfortable, or is pain difficult to control?
* Appetite: Is your pet eating willingly?
* Hydration: Is your pet drinking enough?
* Mobility: Can your pet get up, walk, and use the bathroom comfortably?
* Hygiene: Can your pet stay reasonably clean and comfortable?
* Interaction: Does your pet still seek interaction with you or other pets?
* Enjoyment: Does your pet still enjoy favorite activities?
* Breathing: Is your pet breathing comfortably?
* Good days versus bad days: Are comfortable, enjoyable days becoming less frequent?
Keeping a daily record can help identify changes that are difficult to recognize from day to day.
What if I am still unsure?
You do not have to make this decision alone. Talk with your veterinarian about your pet’s diagnosis, pain or symptom control, expected progression, and quality of life.
Losing a beloved pet can be deeply painful. Pets are family, and the grief that follows their passing is real and personal. There is no “right” way to grieve and no specific timeline for healing.
Is it normal to grieve deeply after losing a pet?
Yes. Feelings of sadness, loneliness, anger, guilt, or even relief after a long period of caregiving can all occur after a pet’s death. Everyone experiences grief differently.
How long does pet grief last?
There is no set amount of time. Some people begin to feel better within weeks, while others may experience grief for much longer. Memories and feelings may continue to come and go, especially around birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, or familiar places.
What can I do to help myself cope with the loss?
Give yourself permission to grieve. Some things that may help include:
* Talking with family or friends who understand your bond with your pet
* Creating a memorial or remembrance space
* Looking through photographs and videos
* Writing a letter to your pet
* Keeping a paw print, lock of hair, or other keepsake
* Maintaining your normal daily routine as much as possible
* Taking time to rest and care for yourself
Should I make a memorial for my pet?
A memorial can be a meaningful way to honor your pet and preserve the memories you shared. Some families choose an urn, paw print, engraved memorial, photograph, jewelry, memorial stone, or a keepsake containing a small portion of their pet’s cremated remains.
What about my other pets?
Your surviving pets may also experience changes after losing a companion. They may search for the pet, become quieter, change their eating or sleeping habits, or seek additional attention. Maintaining familiar routines and giving them extra patience and reassurance can help.
When should I seek additional support?
If grief becomes overwhelming, interferes significantly with your daily life, or you feel unable to cope, consider talking with a mental-health professional or a pet-loss support service. Reaching out for support is a sign that you are taking care of yourself—not that you are grieving incorrectly.

At Forever Pet Crematory, we offer several cremation options so you can choose the type of care that is right for you and your beloved pet.
Communal Cremation:
With communal cremation, multiple pets are cremated together in the same chamber without individual separation.
Because the pets are cremated together, individual cremated remains are not returned to the family.
Individual (aka semi private) Cremation:
With individual cremation, your pet is cremated in the same chamber as another pet, but partition separates the pets during the cremation process.
This provides individual separation within the chamber, and your pet’s cremated remains are carefully processed and returned to you.
Private Cremation:
With private cremation, your pet is the only pet in the cremation chamber during the cremation.
Your pet receives a private cremation without another pet sharing the chamber. After the cremation, the cremated remains are carefully processed and returned to you.
Private Witness Cremation
With private witness cremation, your pet is the only pet in the cremation chamber, and you have the opportunity to be present and witness the cremation process. Ashes will be returned same day.
This option allows families to have a final moment with their pet and personally witness the start of the private cremation. The cremated remains are then carefully processed and returned to the family.
